State and private schools in Canterbury have an excellent history of providing high quality education opportunities to international students. School education in Canterbury consists of eight years of primary education followed by five years of secondary education.
There are about 35 secondary schools in Canterbury, most of which are state schools however there are a number of private and religious schools. Secondary schools cater for students aged from 13 to 18 years. |

The courses and educational standards at secondary schools are similar and all schools prepare students for the same national qualifications that are recognised throughout New Zealand. Students study a basic core of subjects including English, mathematics and science and have a choice of specialist subjects in their senior years.
Students may also sit national qualifications including:
- Year 11 – National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA), Level 1
- Year 12 – NCEA Level 2
- Year 13 – NCEA Level 3

There are five state tertiary institutions in Canterbury with a wealth of education opportunities and world-class research capability. Canterbury has two Universities, two Polytechnics (Institutes of Technology) and a College of Education.
Christchurch’s two Universities offer degrees and diplomas at the pre-degree, undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Both Universities offer a range of subjects including: commerce and management, arts, science, law, engineering, forestry, tourism, primary production, computing, forestry and education. |

Polytechnics/Institutes of Technology in Christchurch provide education and training at certificate, diploma and degree level. Courses emphasise practical experience and application to work situations.
The Christchurch College of Education provides degree, diploma and certificate qualifications in teacher education (early childhood, primary, secondary and teacher professional development) as well as business, sport coaching and performing arts.

In addition to State Tertiary Institutions there are many private tertiary providers offering a range of internationally recognised courses and qualifications. Subjects include, design, architecture, aviation, business, computing, tourism, hospitality and information technology.
The courses are flexible and range from 1 week to 3 years in duration and vary in cost depending on the establishment and the length of course.
